Fartsovshchik

Fartsovshchik

Plural: Fartsovshchiki. A word possibly originating from “for sale,” like in “do you have anything for sale?” A fartsovshchik whose English was usually limited was always on the lookout to buy anything off Western tourists visiting the Soviet Union  and then sell it on the black market . He or she had to be careful not to get caught by militia, so they would ask the question quickly and discreetly.
