Skvira

Town in Ukraine near Kiev. Located in the Pale of Settlement.

Founded in 1390 on the banks of river Skvirka and destroyed at the end of the sixteenth century.

According to documents, it was leased to a Jewish lessee in 1736 when it was a village of a few hundred people. By the end of the 19th century, half of Skvira population of nine thousand was Jewish.

The Twersky Hasidic dynasty from Skvira settled in the United states where it founded its own township New Square (Square is the anglicized version of Skvira.)
