Kazyonny ravvin

Kazyonny ravvin

Official / Government rabbi.

Clerical position in Tsarist Russia to register Jewish births, marriages, and deaths, to translate records into Hebrew during censuses, sometimes performing religious duties as well.  Considered a sinecure and scorned by rabbis. In Russian, the word kazzyonny means belonging or assigned to/by the government.
