Gott

Gott

In Yiddish, God.

God was also addressed more familiarly as Gottenyu (using a Hebrew suffix). This form had a meaning of “dear God” (oy, Gottenyu!) and was intended as an earnest, heartfelt appeal for help and justice. It could be a gentle rebuke, too, as in “how could you allow this to happen?”
