10 May Israel Independence Day
Israel celebrated Independence Day from Sundown on May 8th to Sundown on May 9. Apple Does Not Fall creator Bena Shklyanoy was there to celebrate in person.
Independence Day is the national day of Israel, commemorating the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948. The day is marked by official and unofficial ceremonies and observances. One such observance was an air show and memorial event, followed by fireworks.
“In order to leave the Soviet Union, we had to produce papers that we were being invited by “our relatives” in Israel,” explains Shklyanoy. “I hope to meet them some day,” she jokes.
Once Bena and her family were safely out of the Soviet Union HIAS brought them to Vienna. Ultimately they made the choice to immigrate to the United States.
